DEVELOP THE PERSON – DEVELOP THE PLAYER
EXTRACT FROM THE FA COACHES JOURNAL – SUMMER 2004

Please Mum and Dad:

􀂉 Give me the time and opportunity to make my own decisions both on and off the field – I need to learn the consequences of getting it right and wrong.

􀂉 Try not to tell me off or shout at me from the sideline when I do get things wrong. Give me the chance to relax and play – I need the mistakes to help me learn.

􀂉 Try not to keep offering me advice going to games or coming home again. Let me unwind and reflect – it helps me to learn.

􀂉 Listen to me if I come home with a problem – sometimes I just need someone to talk to – it helps me learn.

􀂉 Remember I am a young person not a small adult – sometimes I don’t see things like you do or understand what you are saying.

􀂉 Come and enjoy the game – I’ll always try my best.

􀂉 Please love me for me – not just the things I can do.

F. Equal Opportunities Policy

• The Elite Development Centre is committed to a policy of equal treatment of
all members and requires all members of whatever level or authority, to
abide and adhere to this general principle and the requirements of the Codes
of Practice issued by the Equal Opportunities Commission and Commission
for Racial Equality.
• All members are expected to abide by the requirements of the Race
Relations Act 1976, Sex Discrimination Act 1986 and Disability
Discrimination Act 1995. Specifically discrimination is prohibited by:
• Treating any individual on grounds of gender, colour, marital status, race,
nationality or ethnic or national origin, religion, sexual orientation or disability
less favourably than others.
• Expecting an individual solely on the grounds stated above to comply with
requirement(s) for any reason whatsoever related to their membership,
which are different from the requirements for others.
• Imposing on an individual requirements which are in effect more onerous on
that individual than they are on others. For example, this would include
applying a condition which makes it more difficult for members of a particular
race or sex to comply than others not of that race or sex.
• Victimisation of an individual.
• Harassment of an individual, by virtue of discrimination.

• Any other act or omission of an act, which has as its effect the
disadvantaging of a member against another, or others, purely on the above
grounds. Thus, in all the Elite Development Centre’s recruitment, selection,
promotion and training processes, as well as disciplinary matters, it is
essential that merit, experience, skills and temperament are considered as
objectively as possible.

• The Elite Development Centre commits itself to the immediate investigation
of any claims of discrimination on the above grounds and where such is
found to be the case, a requirement that the practice cease forthwith,
restitution of damage or loss (if necessary) and to the investigation of any
member accused of discrimination.
• Any member found guilty of discrimination will be instructed to desist
forthwith. Since discrimination in its many forms is against the Elite
Development Centre’s policy, any members offending will be dealt with
under the disciplinary procedure.
• The Elite Development Centre commits itself to the disabled person
whenever possible and will treat such members, in aspects of their
recruitment and membership, in exactly the same manner as other
members. The difficulties of their disablement permitting assistance will be
given, wherever possible to ensure that disabled members are helped in
gaining access. Appropriate training will be made available to such members
who request it.

G. Child Protection Policy
The FA Child Protection Statement
Every child or young person, defined as any person under the age of 18, who plays or participates in football should be able to take part in an enjoyable and safe environment and be protected from abuse. This is the responsibility of every adult involved in football.

The Football Association recognises its responsibility to safeguard the welfare of all children and young people by protecting them from physical, sexual or emotional harm and from neglect or bullying. It is determined to meet its obligation to ensure that those clubs and organisations providing football opportunities for children and young people do so, to the highest possible standard of care. (Appendix 1 – The FA Regulation)These procedures apply to anyone in football whether in a paid or voluntary capacity. For example, volunteers in clubs, referees, club officials, helpers on club tours, football coaches and medical staff.

The Football Association will consider, having taken advice, whether anyone who has a previous conviction or caution for offences related to the abuse of children or young people, violence or any sexual offences should be excluded from working with children or young people. This position is re-inforced by UK legislation and guidance.

The Elite Development Centre has adopted the above Policy and is committed to actively embrace the requirements of the Child Protection Procedures and practices Handbook issued by the Football Association in June 2001 (and as subsequently amended).

The Elite Development Centre has a named Child Protection Officer who is appointed annually at the AGM.
The Child Protection Officer is responsible for ensuring that the Elite Development Centre is kept informed of any changes notified to him/her since the handbook was issued at the Child Protection Training Course. The implications of any changes will be discussed and recorded at a Committee Meeting as appropriate.
The Child Protection Officer is responsible for the administration of the various child protection forms that require completion by volunteers and others connected with the Club.
If players/parents have any concerns regarding suspicions or alleged abuse issues then they should contact the Child Protection Officer who will address the matter as quickly as possible, whilst showing all consideration and confidentiality.

Coaching Syllabuses

Elite views its coaching syllabuses as flexible working documents which each coach should follow in principle.

The Syllabus for each age group is broken down into a number of blocks. Coaches are advised to be flexible in their approach to timetabling the blocks. It is important that each coach provides thorough instruction in each block, and ensures that all players in their age group have fully grasped the essential information related to each topic before moving on to the next block.

The Games Programme should be regarded as an extension of the Coaching Programme. Teams should be coached in Games mainly to put into practice the information on the topics they have been given in the coaching sessions. This should be the absolute priority at all times. Within that context, the scoreline of individual matches are of no significance whatsoever.

Each coach should:

Prior to Session:
• Plan the session completing an Advanced Development Centre Session Plan
• Set up session prior to start time where possible.

Start of Session
• Take register
• Check players are wearing appropriate clothing. No jewellery to be worn at any time. Players should look smart and tidy.
• Ensure players are fit and well
• Check that all players have a drink with them
• Introduce the session

End of Session
• Debrief the Group
• Check for Understanding and give appropriate feedback
• Provide relevant information regarding forthcoming session or game
• Return register to Head Coach
• Evaluate Session
